August 2012 Art Exhibit



Paintings by Vito Incorvaia
Mr. Incorvaia, a graduate of Pratt Institute, worked for many years as a Creative Art Director for well-known Advertising Agencies in New York City. His work in the advertising world won him recognition and many prizes. During these professional years, he continued to study with eminent fine artists such as Clifford Jackson and Anthony Toney to convey his passion in paintings. The exhibit presents landscapes, flowers and portraits in brilliant colors.

IN THE GLASS CASE

Sculptures by Bill Pridham
Mr. Pridham, a passionate sculptor, was most influenced by Michelangelo and Rodin. He taught himself the art of designing and creating sculptures. His fascination with clay led to beautiful intricate pieces, some cast in bronze. He later became a successful builder of Shaker furniture that took up most of his time. Now in later years, Mr. Pridham returns to his first passion of working with clay. The exhibit includes such famous literary figures as Don Quixote, Cerano de Bergerac, Captain Ahab and Dicken’s Fagan.


Metropolitan Opera
2012-13 Season
This is the time to join the NSPL Opera Group for the new season starting on October 4, with Verdi's Il Trovatore. The season also includes Un Ballo in Maschera, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto and Faust. Prices depend on seat selection from Prime Orchestra $1,055 to Family Circle $185 for all operas.

New York Philharmonic Concerts
Tickets for 4 Saturday evening concerts at Lincoln Center for the next season were reserved. Beginning September 29 with Alan Gilbert conducting the Russian composers (Musorgsky, Prokofiev and Rimsky-Korsakov), November 17, Kurt Masur conducting Brahms symphonies # 3 and 5, March 9, Choral works by Bach and Mendelsohn, April 13, David Robertson conducting Messiaen, Mozart and Beethoven. Prices depend on seat selection. For more information, please contact the library at 929-4488 ext. 230 or 258. Transportation will be from the NSPL parking lot by Hampton Jitney coach directly to Lincoln Center returning directly after the performance.

The Storycrafters “Catch the World by the Tale”
Wednesday, August 1 at 7:00 PM
(Tales for a Summer’s Eve Series)
Jeri Burns and Barry Marshall are The Storycrafters. Their natural, energetic style has been featured in major festivals, schools and libraries in the US and abroad, including the National Storytelling Festival. With awards from Parents Choice, The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio and Storytelling World, they specialize in original retellings and modern renditions of world folklore, integrating music and song, poignancy and pizzazz. Publishers Weekly says these storytellers are “top-notch family entertainment.”

Musical Voyage
Friday, August 3 at 7:00 PM
Come and experience a journey through different styles of music with returning pianist, composer and singer, Frederique Trunk. A France-based pianist, Frederique’s energetic lyrical piano style has earned her high praise in both the USA and abroad. Classical, jazz, Latin jazz and French chansons are her inspirations. Accompanied by NYC-based bassist Hill Greene, and singing in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, this voyage will take you somewhere you have never been.

Sound Symphony Orchestra
Friday, August 10 at 7:00 PM
The Sound Symphony will present a concert of Pops, light Classics, and swingin’ favorites, including highlights from My Fair Lady, Sophisticated Ladies, favorites by Leroy Anderson and selections from Grease. Featured in the concert is the lovely and radiant soprano Maria D’Amato, singing concert arias and ballads by Gershwin and Kern.

Beginner Tennis Drill
Saturdays, August 4, 11, 18 & 25
10:00 – 11:00 AM • At SWR HS Tennis Courts This class is for first-timers and those that are somewhat new to tennis. Join instructor Robert Lee as he introduces you to the game. Robert, a semi-pro and tennis enthusiast will surely change your summer with this program. Drills, proper gripping techniques and serves will be taught. Nonrefundable fee: $14.

Intermediate Tennis Drill
Saturdays, August 4, 11, 18 & 25, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
At SWR HS Tennis Courts This class is for the player that already has knowledge of the game, strokes, and wants a good workout! Singles and doubles games will be implemented to allow for practice and assessment. Robert Lee, tennis instructor for over 20 years, change they way you play tennis for future season. Nonrefundable fee: $14. Please wear athletic clothing and footwear, and bring your tennis racket and plenty of water.

A Frog Perfect for your Garden

Create Art in Black and White

Join instructor Marlene Bezich in this insightful art class that will cover many types of techniques surrounding pencil and charcoal depiction. How to Lose Weight While Eating Out
Monday, August 27, 7:00 – 8:30 PM
Are you constantly on the go and find yourself eating at fast-food restaurants often? Come and learn how to lose weight by eating at these very eateries! This is a variation of the Atkins Diet adapted for those who have limited time and eat on the go. Licensed physical education teacher Nick DeNezzo will present this nutritionally sound diet plan.

AARP Defensive Driving
Tuesday & Thursday, August 28 & 30, 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM
The instructor will collect a fee of $17 for AARP members or $19 for Non-AARP members at the first session payable by check only made out to AARP. No cash will be accepted.

Spa Day!
Thursday, August 30, 7:00 – 8:30 PM
Connect with your inner self. De-stress as you learn how to make your own essential oil from herbs and flowers. You will create your own scented lotion, lip balm, or diffuser to take home. This program promises that you leave more relaxed and ready to take on anything! Please bring a large towel or mat.

Technology Clinic
August 21, 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Teen volunteers will provide instruction in the use of a variety of technologies, such as computers, cell phones, GPS devices and iPods. Please call to reserve your 1 hour session and let us know what device you require assistance with. You must bring your own devices for instruction.


There are no fees for the kniting classes; however registration is required for both programs. Please pick up your materials list at registration.

Knit a Pair of Wrist Warmers
Saturday, August 4 10:00 – 11:00 AM
Keep your hands warm even in the summer with these beautiful Wrist Warmers. Beginner and intermediate knitters are welcome! Knitting instructor Judy will be leading this program. Please note: this program runs during Knittin’ Time.

The Reference Department has 4 iPads for use in the library, each preloaded with several applications to help you conduct your research. Please come to the Reference Desk to ask for an iPad. NOTE: You must be over 18 years of age with a valid NSPL Library Card and driver’s license to use an iPad. The librarian will hold your license and card while you are using the iPad.
