July 2012 Art Exhibit
Paintings by Carmen J. Stasi
Mr. Stasi, a local artist, has observed and painted Long Island
farmland for many years. This exhibit gives a picture of LI
sunsets over land and sea in brilliant colors found only on Long
Island. Some of the images are presented as abstracts. Mr.
Stasi, a multi-talented artist, is also a sculptor and creates
beauty from discarded materials or found objects, some of
which are on display.
Metropolitan Opera
2012-13 Season
This is the time to join the NSPL Opera
Group for the new season starting on
October 4, with Verdi's Il Trovatore.
The season also includes Un Ballo in
Maschera, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto and
Faust. Prices depend on seat selection
from Prime Orchestra $1,055 to Family
Circle $185 for all operas.

Philharmonic Concerts
Tickets for 4 Saturday evening concerts
at Lincoln Center for the next season
were reserved. Beginning September
29 with Alan Gilbert conducting the
Russian composers (Musorgsky,
Prokofiev and Rimsky-Korsakov),
November 17, Kurt Masur conducting
Brahms symphonies # 3 and 5, March 9,
Choral works by Bach and Mendelsohn,
April 13, David Robertson conducting
Messiaen, Mozart and Beethoven.
Prices depend on seat selection.

Griots in Concert
(Tales for a Summer’s
Eve Series)
Thursday, July 12
at 7:00 PM
Griots in Concert combine music, song and storytelling
in a dynamic performance for all ages. A “Griot” is the
French word for the storytellers and memory keepers of
West Africa. Linda H. Humes is an actress, storyteller and
founder of Yaffa Cultural Arts Inc. a not for profit arts in
education organization in NY City. Sanga Of The Valley
is a world class Master percussionist. He was the lead
drummer for the late great Babatunde Olatunji.
Nina Et cetera
Friday, July 20 at 7:00 PM
Come celebrate the summer with this rockin’ electric trio with
female vocals by Nina. Returning due to popular demand, Nina
Et cetera features original songs and those sung by Elvis,
Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, et cetera. Among the
bass, guitar, drums, harmonica, and slide guitar, this is sure to
be a great event for the entire family.
Caribbean Jamboree by Steel Impressions

(Musical Escapes Outdoor Concert Series)
Steel Impressions performs authentic Caribbean music:
calypso, reggae and soca tunes on state-of-the-art steel
pans. Come out to dance, tap your feet or just sit and
enjoy the beat of Long Island’s very own steel band,

The Storycrafters
“Catch the World

Jeri Burns and Barry Marshall are The Storycrafters.
Their natural, energetic style has been featured in major
festivals, schools and libraries in the US and abroad,
including the National Storytelling Festival. With awards
from Parents Choice, The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio and
Storytelling World, they specialize in original retellings
and modern renditions of world folklore, integrating
music and song, poignancy and pizzazz. Publishers
Weekly says these storytellers are “top-notch family
entertainment.”
Musical Voyage

Come and experience a journey through
different styles of music with returning pianist,
composer and singer, Frederique Trunk. A France-based
pianist, Frederique’s energetic lyrical piano style has earned her
high praise in both the USA and abroad. Classical, jazz, Latin
jazz and French chansons are her inspirations. Accompanied by
NYC-based bassist Hill Greene, and singing in English, French,
Portuguese and Spanish, this voyage will take you somewhere
you have never been.
Sound Symphony Orchestra
Friday, August 10 at 7:00 PM
The Sound Symphony will present a concert of Pops, light
Classics, and swingin’ favorites, including highlights from My
Fair Lady, Sophisticated Ladies, favorites by Leroy Anderson
and selections from Grease. Featured in the concert is the
lovely and radiant soprano Maria D’Amato, singing concert
arias and ballads by Gershwin and Kern.

Beginner Tennis Drill
Saturdays, July 7, 14, 21 & 28
10:00 – 11:00 AM • At SWR HS Tennis Courts
This class is for first-timers and those that
are somewhat new to tennis. Former
Division II College Coach and semi-pro
player Nicole Bove, will instruct you on
proper swing style and footwork, stretches,
grips, and even give you some secrets to
great serves! Various court games will be
taught to ensure instant success and tennis
enjoyment! Non-refundable fee: $14.
Intermediate Tennis Drill

This class is for the player that already has
knowledge of the game, strokes, and wants
a good workout! Nicole Bove, USPTR
certified coach, will concentrate on stroke
development, conditioning, instruction

and interactive game play will be analyzed

Vinyasa Yoga

guides you through a flowing sequence of
yoga postures linking movements with the

Learn How to Work with Pastels

history of the media as well as the important

Trip to Tanglewood
Sunday, July 29
Bus leaves NSPL parking lot at 8:00 AM for
a 9:00 AM Ferry to Bridgeport where a bus
will wait for all participants to drive to
Tanglewood for an afternoon concert with
the Boston Symphony. Cost: $95. Please call

Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

Our popular evening book discussions will continue
in the Summer.
Our first title, Swamplandia!, was a finalist for the 2012
Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Set in the Ten Thousand Islands
off the southwest coast of Florida, it is the story of the Bigtree family of
alligator wrestlers whose way of life is being threatened. Tragedy ensues
as the daughter in law, a champion alligator wrestler, dies of cancer and
the family patriarch is confined to a floating nursing home with dementia.
The novel, a take on magical realism, is a “wild ride” and sure to elicit a
lively discussion. Please join us as Professor Bill Pike from Suffolk
Community College moderates this vividly exuberant book.

The Reference Department has 4 iPads for use in the library, each preloaded
with several applications to help you conduct your research. Please come to
the Reference Desk to ask for an iPad.
NOTE: You must be over 18 years of age with a valid NSPL Library Card and
driver’s license to use an iPad. The librarian will hold your license and card
while you are using the iPad.
