Lady Sneerwell, who was the target of slander in her long-ago youth, now meets regularly with a group of friends to destroy other women’s reputations by creating and spreading malicious gossip. Called a “middle class morality play,” the very popular School for Scandal was performed 261 times in eighteenth century London and revived hundreds of times since.
