Battle of the Books 2024, Entering Grades 6-9

Wednesdays, June 12, 26, July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, & August 7, 7:00-8:30 PM

  • Final Battle: Friday, August 9, 5:00 – 9:00 PM @ Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge

Join us as we read six books this summer and prepare for a giant trivia game against other libraries in Suffolk County! Check out our YA Instagram – @nsplibraryteens, on Wednesday, 5/1, when we announce the six titles. Registration begins 5/1, books will be available to pick-up on that date. This program is for teens entering grades 6-9 in Fall 2024.


Annual Summer Reading Club – Adventure Begins at Your Library

July Programs!

NSPL’s Land & Sea Tiny Art Show (Adults and Young Adults Grades 6-12)

Calling all Adult and Young Adult Artists to join in the creativity. Take inspiration from the landscapes of Long Island and create a mini masterpiece using your mediums of choice and submit to be a part of our Tiny Art Show.

  • Visit the Library to see our Tiny Art on display from 9/3-9/28 and vote for your top three favorite works of art.
  • An artist reception will be held in September to honor all participants of the community art project, and to recognize the winners of our public vote.
  • Mini canvases will be available for pick-up beginning 7/1; please return your work by 8/26 to be included in the Tiny Art Show.

Community Service – Children’s Programs Volunteers, Grades 6-12

Our Children’s Department is looking for volunteers to help with their summer programs! Visit the Library to register in-person. Limit of two programs per teen.

Cooking with Chef Rob Scott – Melted Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes, Grades 6-12 

Tuesday, July 16, 6:30-7:30 PM

Chef Rob Scott will teach us how to decorate cupcakes to look like a melted ice cream cone. 


Candle Making, Grades 6-12 

Thursday, July 18, 6:00-6:45 PM

Learn the history of candle making and then create your own candle using colorful wax granules, glitter, wax charms and decals! 


Tiny Art Drop In (Adults and Young Adults Grades 6-12)

Saturdays, July 20 & August 17, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

NSPL will have supplies (pastels, watercolors, brushes, pencils, glue, etc.) for you to use while in the library to work on your Tiny Art submission. Artist, Karen I-Kemper will be on hand for guidance/suggestions.


Christmas in July Wood Slice Art, Grades 6 – 12

Wednesday, July 24, 4:00-5:00 PM

Celebrate Christmas in July by creating your very own Christmas themed work of art on a wood slice.

Watercolor Playing Cards, Grades 6-12

King of Hearts? Queen of Diamonds? Step by step, Art Teacher Amy will show you how to draw this fun and a bit challenging king/queen design using watercolors and colored pencils.

Hands Only CPR, Grades 6-12 

Thursday, August 1, 2:00-4:00 PM

Learn hands only CPR during this two-hour course taught by a Red Cross volunteer. Registration begins 7/20. 


D.I.Y. Tic-Tac-Toe, Grades 6-12

Design your very own tic-tac-toe and a bag to carry all the pieces! 


S’mores Kits & Trivia, Grades 6-12 

Monday, August 12, 7:00-8:00 PM

Play trivia with your friends as we put delicious s’mores kits together for some summer fun. Prizes will be awarded to first place! 


Community Service: Flower Bookmarks to Donate, Grades 6-12 

Monday, August 19, 7:00-8:00 PM

Earn one hour of community service and design pressed flower bookmarks to donate to those in need.

Long Island Aquarium Learning Resources & Crafts

Long Island Aquarium Educators have designed age-appropriate learning resources and activities for grades K-12. The lesson plans focus on the animals found at Long Island Aquarium and highlight their taxonomy and adaptations. While they can be used solely in the classroom, these lesson plans also include activities specifically for use when touring the Aquarium.
